1.0 Background

Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Uganda, with support from the World Bank is implementing the “Great Lakes Trade Facilitation Project (GLTFP)” with the aim of improving regional infrastructure and in particular remove both at and behind border constraints to regional trade. The Development Objective of GLTF project is to facilitate cross-border trade by increasing the capacity of commerce and reducing the costs faced by traders, especially small-scale and women traders, at targeted borders.

The project has 4 (four) components which include;

  1. Improvement of core border infrastructure and facilities.
  2. Implementation Policy and Procedural Reforms and undertaking Capacity Building to facilitate cross-border trade in goods and services.
  3. Performance Based Management in Cross-Border Trade Administration.
  4. Implementation Support, Communication plus Monitoring and Evaluation.

In pursuit of component 2, and as a critical activity in preparation for smooth implementation of subsequent project activities, MTIC-GLTFP PCU has organized capacity building and training workshops for beneficiary border local councils (Mpondwe, Bunagana and Goli).
